Key takeaways

  • Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is our top pick for a winter stay on Banderas Bay. It has two Jack Nicklaus Signature golf courses, a kids' club for ages five to 12, and a 2026 Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating.

  • Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort is the pick for couples. It's a separate, adults-only, all-inclusive resort of 15 tents on the same peninsula.

  • Location changes the trip. The Punta Mita resorts are about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta's airport, while Nuevo Vallarta and Marina Vallarta are 20 minutes or less, and the resorts south of town sit on steep hillside coves.

  • Winter is the dry season. Puerto Vallarta averages highs around 80°F from December to March with about an inch of rain a month or less, and humpback whales are in the bay.

  • The two halves of the bay sit in different states. Punta Mita and Nuevo Vallarta are in Nayarit, rated Level 2 by the US State Department, and Puerto Vallarta is in Jalisco, rated Level 3.

Where to stay on Banderas Bay this winter

Banderas Bay curves for roughly 100 km along Mexico's Pacific coast, with the city of Puerto Vallarta on its southeastern shore and the Punta Mita peninsula at its northern tip. Most luxury resorts fall into one of three areas: the gated Punta Mita peninsula and the Litibú coast just north of it, the flat resort strip of Nuevo Vallarta near the airport, and the steep, green hillsides south of downtown Puerto Vallarta.

Winter is the easiest season to visit. From December to March, Puerto Vallarta's 1991-2020 climate normals show highs of 80°F to 81°F, lows in the high 50s and about an inch of rain or less each month. The sea is around 75°F to 77°F. Humpback whales are in the bay over the same months, and Mexico's environment ministry set the 2025-26 viewing season at December 8 to March 23.

We weighed each resort on its setting and beach, how far it is from Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), who it suits, and what you give up by booking it. Room counts and amenities come from each resort's own site or fact sheet, and awards are named only with the year attached.

All-inclusive

1. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita: best for families and golf

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita opened in 1999 on a private peninsula at the northern tip of Banderas Bay. Its 177 rooms and suites are in Mexican-style casitas, and the resort also rents villas, residences and beach homes for larger groups. There are three beaches (Las Cuevas, Manzanillas and a family beach with watersports), four pools including the 86°F Nuna Pool with shallow areas for children, and the 13-room Apuane Spa, according to the resort's fact sheet.

Golf is what sets it apart. The Pacifico course, which opened with the resort, has an optional hole called the Tail of the Whale, played to a green on a natural rock island at low tide; the Bahía course followed in 2009. Both are private Jack Nicklaus Signature designs, open to club members and their guests and to guests of the Four Seasons and the St. Regis. Kids For All Seasons is complimentary for ages five to 12, and The Container is a space for teenagers.

In winter, the resort runs private whale-watching trips and Hidden Beach tours to the Marietas Islands, about 20 minutes away by boat, plus surf lessons at El Anclote. Its 2026 festive program includes a Christmas Eve dinner on Cuevas Beach and a New Year's Eve beach party. The resort holds a 2026 Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating, the AAA Five Diamond award for 2026 and two MICHELIN Keys in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Mexico.

Best for: Families, multi-generational groups and golfers who want a full-service resort during whale season.

Downside: It isn't all-inclusive, so dining is billed separately, and it's a large property built for families and events rather than a quiet hideaway.

2. Naviva, A Four Seasons Resort: best for couples

Naviva opened in December 2022 on 48 forested acres at the edge of the Punta Mita peninsula. It's a separate resort from its neighbor, with its own beach, La Solana, and just 15 tented bungalows, each with a plunge pool, an outdoor shower and roll-up canvas walls. Naviva is adults-only and all-inclusive: rates cover food and drink, one 90-minute spa journey per guest per stay, and daily experiences such as group temazcal ceremonies, sound healing and night-time forest bathing.

In December 2026, Naviva hosts a whale weekend led by a marine biologist from December 18 to 20 and a winter solstice feast on December 21. Condé Nast Traveler named it to its 2026 Gold List.

Best for: Couples on a honeymoon or anniversary trip, and adults who want privacy and a wellness focus.

Downside: With only 15 tents, winter dates go early, and the all-inclusive rate is high. The open-air, nature-first design won't suit everyone.

3. Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa: best for suites near town

Garza Blanca sits on the jungle-covered hillside about 7.5 km south of downtown Puerto Vallarta, on the road to Mismaloya. Its suites and penthouses have one to three bedrooms with kitchens, and the all-inclusive plan is optional. There's Spa Imagine and several restaurants, including Blanca Blue. Its adults-only sister hotel, Hotel Mousai, shares the site.

Best for: Families and groups who want space, a kitchen and quick access to Puerto Vallarta's old town.

Downside: The beach is a small, rocky cove, and the highway divides the property, so some rooms are a shuttle ride from the pools.

4. Casa Velas: best adults-only all-inclusive in Puerto Vallarta

Casa Velas is an adults-only (18 and over), all-inclusive hotel in Marina Vallarta, set along the Marina Vallarta golf course a few minutes from the airport. It has the ABJA Spa and the Emiliano restaurant, and the rate includes access to Táu Beach Club, about five minutes away by complimentary shuttle.

Best for: Couples who want an all-inclusive close to the airport, the marina and downtown.

Downside: It isn't on the beach, so time on the sand depends on the shuttle and the beach club's hours.

5. The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort: best for butler service

The St. Regis Punta Mita is the other large resort inside the gated peninsula, with 120 rooms and suites, each looked after by the brand's butler service. It has a family pool, the adults-only Sakana pool and restaurant, a kids' club and the Carolina restaurant for modern Mexican cooking. A $45 million property-wide renovation added beachfront villas and updated the pools and spa. Guests have access to the same two Jack Nicklaus courses as Four Seasons guests.

Best for: Couples and smaller families who want a quieter, more formal style of service on the peninsula.

Downside: The atmosphere skews romantic, so there's less going on for children than at the larger family resorts.

6. Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit: best all-inclusive near the airport

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is an all-inclusive resort of 267 suites on the beach at Nuevo Vallarta, roughly 20 minutes from PVR. It holds the AAA Five Diamond award, its SE Spa carries a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating, and a $30 million renovation of 242 of its suites was unveiled in December 2025. The rate covers à la carte dining at restaurants including Piaf (French), Lucca (Italian) and Frida (Mexican), plus premium drinks and gratuities. There are kids' and teens' clubs.

Best for: Families who want everything included and a short transfer from the airport.

Downside: Nuevo Vallarta is a flat, built-up strip of resorts and condos, and it's a large resort.

How to choose a Puerto Vallarta resort for winter

Start with who's traveling and how far you want to be from town.

  • For families who want golf and a full resort, book Punta Mita. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita has a kids' club, a teen space and a family beach, and it's close to the whale nursery and the Marietas Islands.

  • For couples, choose by format. Naviva is the small, all-inclusive, wellness-led option; the St. Regis offers more formal service; Casa Velas is the all-inclusive closest to town.

  • For short transfers, stay in Nuevo Vallarta or Marina Vallarta. Grand Velas and Casa Velas are 20 minutes or less from PVR, against about 45 minutes to Punta Mita.

  • For whales, stay on the north side of the bay. The Punta Mita coast is where mothers and calves gather.
