Key takeaways
Best overall: Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, on a gated peninsula north of Puerto Vallarta, with two swimmable beaches, a free kids' club for ages five to 12, a teen space and a baby program.
Best on the Caribbean: NIZUC Resort & Spa, 15 minutes from Cancún's airport, with a kids' club for ages four to 12.
Mind the dates: Mexico's 2027 school break runs from March 22 to April 2, around Easter on March 28. Resorts fill fast that fortnight.
How we ranked: kids' and teen programs, a beach you can swim from, airport access, and Forbes Travel Guide and AAA ratings.
Family spring break in Mexico, coast by coast
For a spring break with kids, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita is our first choice. It has two swimmable beaches, a lazy river, a heated infinity pool with shallow areas, and programs that run from babies to 19-year-olds, about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta's airport. In Los Cabos, Montage and One&Only Palmilla trade the Pacific surf for calm bays, and on the Caribbean side NIZUC is the closest to the airport.
The three coasts behave differently in March. The Pacific around Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita is dry and warm, Los Cabos is drier still, with a cooler sea, and the Caribbean is the warmest, though sargassum has arrived early in recent years. Each resort below ends with a downside.

1. Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita: Best for families with kids of every age
Area & access: A gated peninsula at the northern tip of Banderas Bay in Nayarit, about 45 minutes by car from Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).
Best for: Families with a baby, a grade-schooler and a teenager on the same trip.
Why book it: Two swimmable beaches, a lazy river and a heated infinity pool, plus free daily kids' club programming.
Recognition: Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star for the 10th consecutive year in 2026, and AAA Five Diamond in 2026.
Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita opened in 1999 and has 177 rooms and suites plus villas, residences and beach homes on 52 acres. Kids For All Seasons runs every day from 9am to 4:45pm for ages five to 12 at no charge, The Container gives 13 to 19-year-olds a space of their own with gaming and VR, and Babies For All Seasons covers newborns to 18 months.
In the water, the Nuna infinity pool is kept at 30°C and has shallow areas for younger children, the lazy river has a swim-up bar for parents, and Tropic Surf teaches beginners. In March the Pacific is dry, and humpback whales are usually still in Banderas Bay early in the month.
2. Montage Los Cabos: Best for a calm bay in Cabo
Area & access: Santa María Bay on the Los Cabos corridor, about 40 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).
Best for: Families who want Los Cabos and a beach their kids can swim from.
Why book it: A swimmable bay, a family pool and the Paintbox kids' club for ages five to 12.
Recognition: Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star; AAA Five Diamond since 2018.
Montage Los Cabos has 122 rooms, suites and casas plus 52 residences on Santa María Bay, a horseshoe cove with a Blue Flag beach and water calm enough for swimming and snorkeling. Parents get adults-only pools, and kids get a family pool of their own.
3. NIZUC Resort & Spa: Best for a short transfer on the Caribbean
Area & access: Punta Nizuc in Cancún, about 15 minutes from Cancún International Airport (CUN).
Best for: Families who want the Caribbean without a long drive.
Why book it: Five pools, two beaches and Winik's Kids Club for ages four to 12.
Recognition: Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star; AAA Five Diamond since 2018.
Downside: One of the two beaches is adults-only, and the Caribbean coast gets sargassum.
NIZUC has 274 suites and villas on a 29-acre preserve at the southern end of Cancún's Hotel Zone, away from the busier stretch where college spring breakers go.
4. Fairmont Mayakoba: Best for lagoons and mangroves
Area & access: Mayakoba, north of Playa del Carmen, about 30 miles from CUN.
Best for: Families who'd rather explore lagoons than sit by a pool.
Why book it: Two kids' clubs, Coati and B'alam, and an optional all-inclusive package.
Recognition: AAA Five Diamond since 2007; Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star.
Downside: With 401 rooms it's large, and sargassum can reach the beach.
Fairmont Mayakoba sits inside Mayakoba, a private resort development of lagoons, canals and mangrove forest, which gives kids something to do beyond the pool.
5. Grand Velas Riviera Maya: Best all-inclusive on the Caribbean
Area & access: Playa del Carmen, about 35 minutes from CUN.
Best for: Families who want an all-inclusive with a late-running kids' club.
Why book it: A Kids' Club for ages four to 12 open until 10:45pm, and a teens' club for 13 and up, both renovated in July 2025.
Recognition: AAA Five Diamond since 2010; Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star.
Downside: At 539 suites it's the largest resort on this list, and the Caribbean coast gets sargassum.
Grand Velas Riviera Maya is all-inclusive, so meals, snacks and the kids' club are covered for the week.
When to go: Semana Santa, school breaks and weather
Easter falls on March 28, 2027, and Mexico's public school break runs from March 22 to April 2. During Semana Santa 2026, Mexico's tourism ministry projected hotel occupancy of 78.5% in the Riviera Maya, 78.2% in Puerto Vallarta and 77.9% in Los Cabos, so book early for those two weeks, or aim for early March.
In March, average highs are about 81°F in Puerto Vallarta, 83°F in Cabo San Lucas and 87°F in Cancún. Sea temperatures run from about 71°F in Cabo to 79°F in Cancún. Sargassum reached Mexico's Caribbean coast in January in 2026, weeks earlier than usual.
Travel documents for kids
Every child needs their own U.S. passport book to fly to Mexico. A child traveling without both parents should carry a notarized consent letter from the parent who isn't traveling. The U.S. State Department's Mexico advisory rates Nayarit, Baja California Sur and Quintana Roo at Level 2.
